Our Mission / Misean Scoile

Scoil Bhailenóra strives to provide a productive, caring and happy learning environment where the intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral and cultural needs of our pupils are nurtured and developed.

Our History / Stair na Scoile

A school has existed on the present Ballinora site since 1848. However, it is known that before this time, organised education was provided by religious and other figures in various locations in the locality. The first building was demolished in 1962 and replaced by the current structure.

Records indicate that the school going population was much smaller in years of old, with approximately 75 children attending during the 1940’s. Two teachers were employed at this time. Numbers of pupils and teachers increased gradually over the years however and many continued into secondary education. The best known past-pupil is probably the late Bishop of Cork & Ross, Cornelius Lucey, who hailed from the townland of Windsor.

Our School at Present / Ár Scoil Faoi Láthair

Scoil Bhailenóra is a mixed school currently catering for approximately 300 children. The teaching staff is made up of twelve class teachers, four learning support/resource teachers and the Principal.

In common with the majority of Irish primary schools, Scoil Bhailenóra is state funded and run by a Board of Management, under the patronage of the Catholic Bishop of Cork and Ross. The school enjoys strong links with the local parish. While the ethos of the school is Catholic, children of other faiths and of none are welcome and all are cherished equally.

Our school is a vibrant community where much learning and activity takes place. We have also built up a proud sporting and musical tradition. Many pupils learn to play a variety of musical instruments during and after school. Participation in sport is also actively encouraged and our school successfully participates in a variety of pursuits including peil, iomáint, soccer and athletics. After school speech and drama classes are also available.

Strong school-community links with organizations such as the local Scout Movement, GAA, Soccer Club and Pioneer Association benefit our pupils in many ways also.
