World Book Week
As part of our annual readathon, the senior classes read War Horse by Michael Murpurgo. The narrative of the book spans the First World War from its outbreak in 1914 to the armistice in 1917. On Monday 10th March we visited the Opera House to see a live streaming of a production based on the book which was performed by the National Theatre of Great Britain. It was a wonderful morning's entertainment and added another dimension to this powerful and emotive book.

Green School
There was great celebration on Friday 7th March when dual Cork camogie and ladies football All Ireland player Breege Corkery raised our second green flag. This flag was awarded for energy conservation and the hard working committe under the direction of Mr Walsh and Ms Nyhan ensured that we are all vigilant about turning off lights, unplugging appliances and closing doors. A new committee will be formed shortly and we will begin working towards achieving a third flag for Water conservation. This should prove very topical this year.

Classroom News
Some of the classes are now keeping blogs, which they update regularly with news and pictures of all their activities and work.
You can find links to the blogs in the KIDS ZONE section of the web site.
Chess
Our anual chess competettion is well underway and we are now in the second round. This year we had a record entry with 79 competitors. The competition is eagerly contested and the lunch time atmosphere in Mrs O Cathasaigh's room is often very tense indeed.

Safer Internet Day

This year's call to action is, “Let’s Create a Better internet Together” .
This link suggests some fun activities games and videos that parents and children can engage in together at home. It is hoped that this will lead to discussions about being safe on the internet and about using the internet appropriately.

Cork Schools Heritage Project
The West Cork Railway

Ms Nyhan’s class have been very busy since Christmas, putting the finishing touches to their project on the West Cork Railway. The project involved actively working as historians, gathering , analysing, recording and communicating information.
The Primary History curriculum defines History as not being the story of the past but rather:
Our attempts to re-construct and interpret elements of the past which are of interest to us.(History Curriculum,DES 1999).
This is exactly what Rang 5 did. They invited former railway workers to visit their class and they interviewed grandparents who shared their memories of the railway. They examined photographs and they visited the site of the Waterfall Station which is now the home of Dan and Attracta Kent. Mr Kent shared his vast knowledge of the railway and the station house in particular with the class. They also got an opportunity to walk around the garden and the outbuildings and to imagine what it might have been like 100 years ago when passengers were boarding trains to Cork or later when farmers were loading beet and cattle on to the wagons.
Back in class they put all of the information together and they built models of the station house, line, and local houses. They also produced maps, timetables and tickets and they put together accounts of the numerous stories and anecdotes they had heard. Without doubt Rang 5 re-constructed and interpreted an element of the past which was of interest to them.
On Friday 24th Jan they invited in their parents, other classes and members of the local community to view their finished work. The children willingly shared their findings and “taught” their visitors. The excitement and enthusiasm for their subject was infectious.
The finished work was entered in the Cork Schools Heritage Project competition and we are now looking forward to getting some feedback from the judges.

Up The Rebels!!
Bhí an lá ar fad againn ag tacú le foireann Chorcaí ar an 6 Méan Fómhair.

The school was a sea of red and white as everyone dressed up to support the rebels.

We gathered on the bank and each class gave a rousing rendition of The Boys of Fairhill.

Prizes were presented for the best dressed supporters from each class and there was also a colouring competition and a programme design competition.
The highligh of the morning was the final of the Poc Fada with all of the participants being eagerly cheered on by their classmates and friends.

Bhí lá iontach ar fad againn agus táimid ag súil le lá eile ar an 27 Méan Fómhair and of course an even bigger celebration on Mon 30th when we hope to have Liam back to his rightful home by the Banks.
Gach duine Anseo!
Congratulations to the 27 pupils who had a full attendance for the 2012-2013 school year.
