Special Visit from Oisín’s Dad, Steve!

11th Feb 2025

Today, our Junior Infants had a delightful treat as we welcomed a very special guest to our classroom. Steve, who is Oisín's dad came to share with us the rich and vibrant culture of China, and we learned so many fascinating things.

Steve started by amazing us with the fact that China is so vast that Ireland can fit into it 116 times! He then shared with us what Chinese zodiac animals we all were based on our birth years. We were the Rat, the Pig or the Dog!

One of the highlights of Steve's visit was when he explained why red is considered a lucky colour in China. He told us about the beautiful red lanterns that decorate the streets during Chinese New Year, bringing good luck and happiness for the coming year. Furthermore, Steve explained that loud noises and fireworks are traditional during Chinese New Year because they are believed to scare away bad luck.

He also shared the interesting story of Chinese dumplings and how they were first created and also told us about the custom of giving children money in red envelopes to mark the new year.

Steve showed pictures of Oisín his family at the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven, allowing us a glimpse into these magnificent places. He also taught us a few Chinese words and showed us videos of spectacular fireworks and a cool robot they met in China.

We all had a fantastic time learning about Chinese culture and traditions. Thank you, Steve, for making this day so special and informative. Xièxiè (thank you)!
